Knowing that I would be out in the Eastport/Riverhead area for non-birding
reasons, I made sure to bring my scope in order to look for grasspipers on the
sod fields as soon as my obligations were done.
The Eastport fields (Eastport Manor Rd. and Rte 51) yielded only a few Killdeer
combined, so it was on to Riverhead. There, I started my search on the fields
bordered by Doctor's Path, Northville Tpke, Rte. 105, and Sound Avenue. My
vantage point was the firefighter training facility accessed from Northville
Tpke, west of 105. I'd been scoping for barely 5 minutes when I spotted 6 birds
foraging on a fallow field off to the west--BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS all. They
were still there when I left at ~3:45. A subsequent check of the Osborn Ave.
field turned up no further grasspipers of any kind.
