New York County (in N.Y. City), including Manhattan, Randall’s and Governors
Island[s]
Monday, M.L. King Day, 1/17 -

Two Western Tanagers each continued in their respective areas of Manhattan, per
the most-recent prior reports to this list.  Showing off of Manhattan mostly
along the Hudson river were at least several Common Goldeneye, of which some
more were also found from Governors Island, again with scanning the waters. Two
drake Lesser Scaup came to visit ‘The Pool’ in Central Park, along with a
long-staying hen Green-winged Teal.

Some highlights from Randall’s Island included an ongoing Glaucous Gull, as
well as the long-staying adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, and the reappearance
of additional Killdeer (a minimum of 6), plus a lingering American Pipit as
well as Orange-crowned Warbler; lingering waterfowl included Snow Goose, with
many [Atlantic] Brant and Canada Geese, both of the latter perhaps still
increasing in numbers. Among ducks seen there were a few (distant) Common
Goldeneye and a (not distant) pair of N. Pintails, as well as other
more-regular species.

Highlights from Governors Island were fresh sightings of Purple Sandpipers,
scanning the rocks near ‘Picnic Point’, with high count of well over a dozen.
Also showing again on Governors - Killdeer, albeit not yet in numbers as found
on Randall’s Island on Monday. Common Ravens have been showing there, as they
also have in other parts of the county.

Snow Goose sightings for Central Park, all just one individual, came from the
reservoir, the lake, and from Sheep Meadow, all of which have been hosting
flocks of Canada Geese recently.

Warblers still holding on around the county include Orange-crowned, as well as
Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat, with the largest numbers being the ongoing
small flock of Myrtle/Yellow-rumped Warblers in the ‘Hills’ section of
Governors Island, with its native plantings including bayberry.

Good birding to all,
