Its always the case... NZ is not the cheapest place to buy Macs.... When I was working at Renaissance (the NZ distributors of Apple) about 5 years back, we used to joke that it costs the same to fly to San Fran, pick up a 17" Powerbook, have a small holiday and fly back as it does to go across the road and buy one from a retailer here!
Crazy... Saying that, they have come a long way to bringing more of the prices closer to being inline with overseas...
