I remember one of the big issues with Drupal was the amount of classes the 
system would hook into (sometimes un-necessarily) causing speed issues.

Alot of the big sites I looked at using Drupal claimed to have hacked the 
core to do away with this.

But this was a good year ago, 5.x stuff. Is it still an issue with 6.x? I 
was under the impression that 6.x was quite an architecture revision.

Drupal 6 is fast for anonymous users.  Basically everything is cached
so it is just lifting content from about a dozen cache tables.  Looks
like this is a stripped down version as well, css has been custom
handled and placed into 3 files rather than the dozens you usually
have.

Wait till you try logging in and then it'll slow down to 'normal'
speeds.

Great site though, obviously lots of work has gone into refining it
for looks as well as performance.  It is all credit to Drupal that it
can be extended beyond mere social/hobby sites.
