With most recent Drupal themes (esp. those based on the Zen theme), if you're a) logged in, b) have sufficient admin permissions, and c) hover of any block on the page, you'll see an edit and a configure link, allowing one-click editing - it's not quite edit-in-place, although there are some substantial limitations to that model, too (e.g. it doesn't make it easy to add UI elements for meta data, etc.) - but it's still quite intuitive.
An "easy" or "basic" CMS is a nice idea, but ultimately, simple or not, a CMS solution for a business needs support (i.e. a vibrant, active development community) and a migration path (because no business wants to hear: oh, a forum? No, our CMS doesn't have one of those, but we can write one for you from scratch) - otherwise it's just another fly-by-night one-man-band not-quite-there CMS with no long term future. The ground is littered with thousands little in-house CMSs that never had a hope of achieving critical mass. I recommend avoiding them.
