This is a universal requirement and why the Commonwealth bank supposedly 
doesn't demand it is odd. I'd consider that lucky, but certainly not not 
indicative of future 'luck' as this is a card scheme requirement and as such 
all merchant acquiring banks (and therefore all merchants) must adhere.
