stuff currently runs on a custom written perl codebase AFAIK. speed of
an application nowadays heavily depends on the underlying
architecture. it is possible to speed up the slowest of dogs to run
pretty acceptable. if you go for speed, php is most likely not your
language of choice but it really depends on what you are after. off
the shelf vs custom development - with the custom solution always
being the faster one in the end but the first one almost certainly
being the faster one to market.

facebook got out of their resource/performance problem with php by
developing HipHop which compiles php down to c++ and then runs that in
a custom web server. caching layers are important as well, fast
databases and DB tuning is an important aspect. once you have a
heavily loaded website you will see the parts that are falling off and
you will have lots of fun tuning them. this will be the same with
every solution, some make it easier than others but you will be there
in the end. picking a product off the shelf for high performance does
not work, there is more to it and always will :-).

on a side note, i am currently working on a decent hosting platform
for magento sites that outgrow the standard hosting and need more
performance - i am sure there are similar issues with loaded
drupal/joomla/... sites as well and i am happy to share how my stuff
works. also, i'll open up that platform for developers somewhen this
year.

hope this helps a bit, and as always, feel free to mail me :-)
cheers
