It is sad. Whether you agree or disagree with Apple's regard for the "open" movement, there's no doubt his products made consumer computing in many forms accessible to a vast number of people who otherwise didn't have straightforward options. I've heard many people in my life talk about the "sigh of relief" when they found they could finally use a product like a MacBook Pro or iPhone to achieve the simple things they wanted to do without feeling incompetent or confused. He'll be missed.
