Hi Andreas
do you have any previous programming experience? If so then you should
be able to pick it up pretty quirky and apply any existing patterns and
practices from other similar languages such as c#, Java etc. I picked up
PHP about 15 years ago when I was a designer and didn't have any
previous programming experience. I didn't find it too hard to pick up
but as Jmumby stated patterns and practice tend to be something you pick
up along the way. If you want to get up to speed with programming PHP
(or any other language) then start by learning the basics of the syntax
(hello world examples, connecting to database etc). Then if you want to
continue and get serious about it, look at object oriented programming
and some common frameworks such as codeigniter, silverstripe or other
popular php software (Wordpress & Drupal are good examples, although
Drupal's code structure can be a bit daunting at first).
It's hard to say what you would need to cover and in what order as its
such a broad subject but just give it a go. Start writing something, ask
questions of forums, look at examples and tutorials. It will all start
to make sense and you will start to notice common practices and methods
and before you know it you will have written some code. Then you will
come back and look at it two years later and go 'what was I thinking,
that's terrible' as you will have improved and picked up better practice.
Try some of these sites to get started:
http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/php
http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/php/php.html
http://www.killerphp.com/tutorials/object-oriented-php/
Good luck

Ash

You could learn PHP but how do you learn to deal with issues such as
security and good practice. Seems to me there is no way to learn php
or any web tech for that matter without being in the business.

Hi,
I'm wanting to learn PHP but only have a limited programming
background.
Are there any courses in Auckland coming up or any good websites
to learn PHP that the community can recommend?
Regards,
Andreas
