Android Studio has good community support, so it's definitely a good way to
go.

If you've got a couple of hours just to quickly go through a tutorial to
see what the environment is like, you could check this out:

Skip the emulation stuff, it's a waste of time. Just test it on your own
android device.

As for your app, scanning QR codes would be the easiest way to decide what
information needs to be displayed (kind of boring though). More fun would
be to look into image recognition so that folks can just take a picture of
the artwork to get info about it. I haven't done any research on it, but
Google has "Google Goggles", and I vaguely remember hearing about other
such apps. Google usually has API's for their services, so maybe they have
something for Goggles.

Streaming the data to the devices would probably be best. If this is an app
to be used onsite, and if (by the sounds of it) the app is a key way for
your punters to interact with your business, then you should have Wifi for
them to use anyway.
