It would also be worth contacting the domain registrar, as they may have
some sort of process to request a change of account (or something along
those lines).

If they do have such a process then I imagine you'll probably need to
provide all documentation to prove your client *should* be the owner of
that domain. Receipts of payment for the domain service. Any emails between
your client and the web company regarding *who the domain is for*. You can
probably also argue the above points if they didn't fill in the WHOIS
record correctly.
