I've used Symfony since version 1.0 right through to 2.1, I've stopped from
there and moved to Silex where I can pick my own components. Composer kind
of replaced Symfony in my view. Using Composer (with Silex) makes the
project more loosely coupled.

About contract work, there are quite a few out there.
