Hi folks,

I am continuing the work on our designs for course search and browse (which I
presented on at the conference).

We need to understand how the tags & categories are generated when doing an OAE
search so we know what our options will be for modifying their display to help
get people to their content. (In case it's helpful, the categories we are going
to use for our upcoming release can be found here: Categories 1.4
Specifications.)

We know that in a search (see screenshot: http://cl.ly/image/3W2z2A1Q0c2C) only
10 tags are returned, and and that they are some version of the "top 10" tags.

What we don't know:

1) Does this selection of tags include both categories and tags?

We believe it does but want to confirm.

2) How are the "top 10" determined?

We know that only 18 items are returned before infinite scrolling is activated,
so if the sort is by "recently updated" and it is the top 10 tags out of these
first 18 items only, they are probably not the most popular tags for the entire
data set.

3) Are the rest of the tags stored somewhere else so that we could access them
if we wanted to display more?

For example, in lieu of implementing facets this release, we are considering
grouping the tags in some way, e.g. on a search for "biology" you may be
presented with a grouping of tags something like this:

Colleges & Schools: College of Letters & Science Biological Sciences
                                                <show more>
                    Subjects: Biological Sciences
                                                <show more>
            Campus Life: Professional; Service
                           Tags:  fertilization; RNA; karyotype; nucleus;
glycogen; chromosome; DNA; mammal; bacteria; Molecular Biology Majors Group

We plan to do some user testing of this next week, so answers to these
questions would help us make the most realistic mock-ups possible for our users
to react to.

Thanks!
Allison
