FWIW, note that in Sling we do have a few independent Maven project trees:

-The main pom builds the core modules and their integration tests
-A separate contrib tree and main pom
-Another tree and main pom for tools (Maven plugins etc.)

I have found it useful to have a clear separation between the "sacred"
core modules and other less critical things. There's no excuse for
breaking the core build but we use a smaller trout to slap whoever
breaks the other ones.
