A thank you and goodbye to Daphne Hope, Ottawa cycling planner, advocate, and former OBC president
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that this is the last afternoon that the City of Ottawa's manager of Cycling and Walking Programs will be working with us as a city employee. Join me in extending best wishes for her new adventure. I have worked with Daphne Hope since at least 1990 when she was on the executive of the Ottawa Bicycle Club and I was a neophyte cycling advocate. As her four years as OBC president, Daphne initiated a number of exciting projects, including major Ottawa bicycle (retail) shows and presentation of the first bicycles to the Ottawa police to get them to start their first bicycle patrol. Daphne was a founding member of the first cycling advisory committee in this region, in the former City of Ottawa, in 1989. Together, we worked to get that committee established. She joined the old City of Ottawa as its first cycling coordinator about ten years ago, and worked with both the cycling and pedestrian advisory committees for that city. You can't go anywhere in the old city of Ottawa limits or even the new City of Ottawa without encountering Daphne's extensive work to improve cycling and walking. This work is looked upon as leading edge by other cities and cycling advocates, who now point to it as examples of what they would like to accomplish in their own communities. Here are but a few: * the city's first Comprehensive Cycling Plan, including the cycling route network both for the old City of Ottawa and RMOC * cyclist-only signals, that allow cyclists to go through intereections that motorists are prohibited from * covered bicycle parking in downtown Ottawa * improvements to the quantity and quality of bicycle parking at Ottawa community centres and transit stations * the Complete Ottawa Cycling Guide, distributed to every household in the city * contra flow bicycle lanes * signed bicycle routes, and the filling in of many 'missing links' that were barriers for residents trying to get from A(uto) to B(icycle) * promotional materials for winter cycling and a pilot winter route * supervised bicycle parking in the Market every summer * city awards for individuals and businesses that promote cycling * work on the NCC's integrated pathway study and implementation * training of many city eployees in how to better design for and properly accommodate bicycles in their own work ...and a lot more! There is no doubt that Daphne has been a leading bicycle planner in Canada and an 'inside advocate' in city hall for cycling and walking in Ottawa. Daphne is going to Saudi Arabia to be with her husband who is working there. Will it be long before we see bike lanes across the desert and the Saudis see the light and give up on oil exports and start exporting .. bicycles! We shall watch with interest. Daphne, thank you for your contributions to the quality of life in Ottawa. We wish you all the best.
