> I have a question and couldn't come to a conclusion yet. > Suppose all the partial derivatives of f:R^n -> R exist and are > bounded on an open set U. This doesn't imply differentiability of f on > U, but does it imply the existence of all the directional derivatives > of f on U? No. With z = (x,y), let f(z) = 0 if z = (0,0), f(z) = (xy/|z|)*sin(ln(|z|)) otherwise. Then f is C^oo on R^2 \ {(0,0)}. A little computation shows that the partial derivatives of f are bounded on R^2 \ {(0,0)}. Because f vanishes on the coordinate axes, the partial derivatives of f exist and are bounded on all of R^2. But for x > 0, f(x,x) = (x/sqrt(2))*sin(ln(sqrt(2)x)), which is not differentiable at x = 0. Thus f fails to have a directional derivative at (0,0) in the direction of (1,1). In fact, f fails to have directional derivatives at (0,0) in all directions except those along x and y axes. --- "claudio.buffara" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Fico contente.
