Insp Piedt did an inspection yesterday and tells me that he thinks this
business will not be any problem, I will take walk down as soon as I can.
However as the Observatory representative on th CPF Liquor committee it is my
duty to inform the residents.

      Hi all

My appologies if you receive this more than once, but I want to reach as
many as possible.

I have just received a call from Insp. Piedt. Blue Marlin in Lwr Main
has applied for a licence, it is somewhere near the Art Shop.

Please let me have your objection no later than Thursday in order for me
to get them to the relevant persons on Friday.

Not trying to tread on anyones toes, but should we not engage in dialog with
prospective owners before just asking for objections.

This is the problem with having a weak Business Forum. One would hope that
anyone thinking of opening a business in Obs would get in contact with the
Business Forum to find out details of doing business in Obs - one important
detail is that there is a lot of belligerence with regards to liquor licenses.

For instance on what grounds can anyone object to this license. The shop
looks nice enough and they have clearly spent a bit of money on it and it could
very well be an asset to the community. By immediately shouting the owners down
by calling for objections is not very neighbourly and would make them feel
unwelcome and get their backs up. If we could have an introduction they could
explain their vision for the business and undertake to manage their business
and patrons so that they become and asset to the community and not another
liability.

I know how I would have felt if when I had applied for my license that their
were objections from people without anyone ever having bothered to contact me
to discuss it first.

The reason new businesses do not make contact is that they probably do not
even know of the existence of the OCA/Business forum. We need a higher profile
and to engage with new businesses.

I agree there are shortcomings in the way the licenses are issued and
communities notified but we need to engage the business community.

Was this Blue Marlin not somewhere else? Was this not one of those license
removals? I get so confused sometimes with these process.

I will pop by there this evening and try find out who is the responsible
person.

  Trev
