I leave mine open for the same reason - my cat must be able to get in and 
out. This is only the second time in 3-4 years that someone has tried to 
steal anything through the window, so I guess I've got off lightly. I'll 
follow your suggestion and add some mesh, with a small enough hole for my 
cat to walk through. This *might* make the open window less attractive to 
thieves. Thanks for the suggestion!
