I've done a fair bit of this, being we had a bung server running the dug
list (and the 100+ domains on this machine) for a while. I had to merge
2 NT machines into 1, which is not possible without extracting all the
info from the metabase using ADSI (via VBS), then using their scripts to
put it all back. Its not pretty.

You can run a backup of the metabase (via the MMC), uninstall IIS,
reinstall, and restore the backup, and they SAY it works. I say ghost
first. MS does state, tho, that you can't backup on one machine and
restore on another machine, which to me is damn pointless!

The util I posted to Peter, which is found at:

http://www.winsite.com/info/pc/winnt/miscutil/metabaseport.exe/

extracts the metabase and schema into its own format, and allows you to
reinstall it. If you are going from 1 machine to 1 machine, I'd say it
works perfectly (or close enough). 2 to 1 and your stuffed.

I can't see why MS didn't provide a method to back it up - I would have
given my right testical for a text-based setup on this one, at the time
- being that NT is no where near stable enough to be left to its own
devices.
