I use Norton's and the protection is good. It does cause problems with
real-time scanning and sometimes causes software problems. Crystal reports
for example cannot open some reports containing images if Norton's 2002 (and
others) have script blocking enabled. So yes it does cause problems but so
does any invasive application (we have one computer that died after
installing AVG on it, it became so slow we had to reinstall the OS).

I assume these people updated their signatures religiously? As far as I
have seen, Symantec is one of the leaders in virus research and usually
announces new viruses early. If you don't keep your virus signatures up
to date then you can't expect to be protected from new viruses.

All I can say to this is that I have never had to disable Norton
Antivirus for anything - games, software installation, etc. This is with
several different OSes and several versions of NAV.
I won't say it has been perfect, but NAV has certainly kept my PC virus
free for a few years now.
