I like the 2.5" hdd external enclosures with usb 2 (or firewire).

The 2.5" drives are rugged, portable, but a little dearer than 3.5" ones.

The one I source is around $150 for the enclosure, plus the cost of the hdd
(I use 40gb).

With Win2k and XP, no drivers needed, and with XP you don't get the surprise
removal of hardware messages. Also on most pc's no power is needed - it
draws from the usb connection.

Format them as NTFS so you can backup to a single large file.

Also, I strongly recommend a raid card and 2 mirrored drives as well for
your main storage.
