i will throw this out even though it probably doesn't apply.

we recently had a case of a machine that had been briefly
connected to the net after a "virgin" W2K install (before the
security hotfixes) and it picked up the "welchia" worm.
This thing ran for a few days - hogging network bandwidth
until i did a "netstat" command and noticed all the connections
it had open to surprising places.

if you had a working connection that suddenly slowed
and can't explain it be sure you don't have a worm making
extra connections behind your back.
