Btw, I think there are some Sun employees that contribute above and
beyond what is called for as part of their "job". I know of several Sun
employees (or contractors) who have contributed quite a lot to
OpenSolaris in the past. (I think I fall into that category... I've put
a lot of unpaid after work hours into doing stuff for OpenSolaris that
I'm not paid for by Sun. I've also contributed code that was written by
me for which Sun has not paid me a penny. My "afe" and "mxfe" drivers
fall into that category.)
I'd therefore suggest that any awarding of "contributor awards" consider
_personal_ contributions, regardless of place of employment. However,
work done on the behalf of a big company (like Sun Microsystems)
represents contribution by the employer, not by the individual. Such
work therefore should be excluded. (There may be other similar
contributions from outside commercial entities... I'm not sure.)
(The other problem with excluding Sun employees is that that situation
is dynamic. A lot of contributors probably hope to be hired by Sun, and
some of them may have been Sun employees at one point during the last
two years, but that might not represent even a significant portion of
the time at which the contributions occurred. For example, in my
particular case, I have been a Sun contractor for only one month, and my
contract ends in 3 months. None of my contributions -- yet! -- to
OpenSolaris thus far were done as part of the work that I'm being
contracted by Sun to perform.)
