Below is an outline of the reorg for today's community call. I can't
make the call because it comes at the tail end of my 22 hour Tuesday and
it would extend the day to 26 hours with only about 3 hours of sleep.
Can't do it. So, if someone on the OGB could brief the community on our
reorg/simplification progress that would be great. Please feel free to
correct anything I have wrong. Thanks.
Background:
The OpenSolaris community has asked the OGB to simplify governance so
operations can move faster and better reflect how work gets done. At the
OpenSolaris Summit in May the OGB made a commitment to begin this
process. The timing for a reorganization is good since the OpenSolaris
Infrastructure Engineering Team has also been building new functionality
into the OpenSolaris website platform that will support a more flexible
community organization and fix some well-known site issues. The new
website platform will be rolled out in stages over the coming months, so
this is a good opportunity to also address governance issues as well.
Approved Proposals:
The OGB has approved a new group creation process, a new membership
process, and new roles & groups organization for the community:
* Roles/Groups Proposal
http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/OGB_2008/010
This proposal reduces the number of roles in the community and
removes the required hierarchical relationship of the existing
Communities and Projects. It also makes User Groups equal to the
other groups we have on the site and creates an electorate group
to hold the OpenSolaris Members.
* Group Creation Process
http://genunix2.org/wiki/index.php/OGB_2008/010_group_creation
This proposal unifies the group creation process for the first
time so all groups are created the same way and so everyone knows
what the rules are.
* Membership Process
http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/OGB_2008/010_membership
This proposal outlines how people become members and applies the
same process in a fair way across the entire community.
PLEASE NOTE: These documents are not live yet and may need some
additional work. Also, we may need to consider other issues in the reorg
and simplification process as the infrastructure is implemented. The
next stage of the reorg process will involve discussions around
implementing these plans, updating the Constitution to reflect the
changes, documenting anything else that is necessary, and synchronizing
all of this with the OpenSolaris Infrastructure Engineering Team's
platform development plans.
