He's making his own classes anyway, so he'll need to define what 1st level
means regardless.  But that wasn't my point.  Let me rephrase- it's easier
to work within the legal restrictions of d20 by redefining a class than it
is to discuss things like 'give your character 10 levels'.  The former is
fair game under d20, while the latter skirts the dangerous 'effect of
advancing levels' territory.  I'm sure it could be done either way, but the
latter requires paying more attention to the legalese, a task  most laymen
consider onerous.

That's what I was thinking when I assumed he had a good reason.  Since Mr.
Lizard is defining his own classes anyway (and we know very little about his
system), it would be hard to accurately guess what he has in mind.
