I know there's a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek in this but consider what
the real benefits of ISBN numbers are.
Simply put, an ISBN means you get to have your products registered in that
great 'Book' database in the sky which menas that people who have only heard
a vague whiff of your product stand a chance of wandering in to any old
bookstore and getting in touch with you or getting the store to order your
product. Huge bonus. Having actually seen this occur with a friends
company (Brittania Games, publishers of C&S 4 - you can curse me with boils
for mentioning it here later) I can tell you that although the process is
dated, overpriced (perhaps) it is irrelevant compared to the actual
difference between being a 'small publisher' and 'some guys who printed up
some stuff' that you got the local hobby store to carry.
As a subnote, I know its not all /that/ simple, but you get the drift ;)

Screw d20, I wish I had gotten in on this ISBN thing.
This "RR Bowker" has a racket set up. $250 for 10
numbers is insane. And all you get is a cheesy old
style sheet fed dot matrix print out of stickers. I
figured at least you would get a fancy log. But no.
