No. What MS was doing was taking the core of Java, and ADDING to it
additinal ways to make it run faster and better than on Windows machines.
It was very much like what we are hypothesizing with the OGL. The CORE Java
was still there, just there were additional parts that were *BETTER* -
provided you were programming for Windows - so naturally any intelligent
programmer knowing that most of their market would be Windows machines, used
the non-java extensions.
In essence the Windows JAVA was "better" because it was more specific than
the core system.
This was DEFINITELY a threat to Sun's objective - ie to be the "java"
monopolist - ie: the keeper of the flame for Java.

Actually the whole Java concept was flawed. Nobody *really* wants a cross
platform solution because a cross platform solution is not optimized - it is
"dumbed down".
Sun saw MS winning this battle in the market because of those flaws. and
decided to take them to court. Well, they won, but they essentially lost -
because Microsoft is now going their own way, and are now taking 80+% of the
world with them...
