1: WotC prodcuts *AREN'T* being opened, the D20SRD is. You'll be able to
use the attack chart and classes from the PHB (which are duplicated in the
D20SRD), but not the Spellfire rules from Forgotten Realms (which probably
won't be in the D20SRD for awhile yet.)

I'd imagine that a new class can state it's skill points per level, and you
could even give it an extra feat or so. You couldn't say "When you reach a
"new level", you can gain a level in a new class, and when you do that your
bonuses go up, you get another Hit die, etc."

A "Classless" system and a good "custom-class" system are identical, for
what it's worth. Just write up a class with lousy everything but a lot of
feats and skills--and then write up all of the class abilities as feats and
skills for this class.

If you don't like the flat, singular "level" mechanic (and I can argue that
it IS a good thing! Even GURPS has a similar mechanic!) then you could just
split up each skill into its own class, and make a shorter XP chart. (You
can include a new chart, as long as you don't say what it's for...)
