I agree with your assessment. The game industry was
better 20 years ago. But check out this information:

Holy $h*t! 10,000 PHBs!...and thats just at GenCon.
The PHB--before its release--is already a huge seller
at Amazon.
Looks like the purchasing base for 3e is plugged in.
People are ready for the renaissance.
