When Planescape: Torment came out, there was a monstrous rush of people
buying up everthing dealing with PS they could find. There are quite a few
members of the PS mailing list that were drawn into the tabletop game
because of the CRPG. The way I see it, if the game has a tabletop
counterpart and the game is good enough (as was the case for Torment), it is
bound to drive up the sales of the tabletop game at least little if not a
lot. Games with no tabletop counterpart, like Ultima or Might and Magic,
probably won't hurt sales of tabletop games at all. Let's face it, if
someone is drawn away from the table to play on their computer, they more
than likely weren't going to be long-term buyers of paper games anyway. On
the other hand, I know of several Everquest players that have tried out AD&D
because they found out that EQ was a blatant ripoff of AD&D, so even CRPG's
can get some people to try out tabletop games.
