I can state with a great deal of personal experience that this is true. Ever wonder why Paramount has _not_ licensed the term "communicator" for a cell phone? Because they don't own the trademark for "Communicator" in telephony. My day job company does. They can do radios and toys, we have things that connect to the telephone network. Granted at the time VSSI (the original holder, now BCG, via VST) got it for telephony, real small cell phones were just a pipe dream, and cell phones them self were rather rare.
