Depends on where you look.  Most of that talk was going on in Usenet by
silly people who wanted to make PHB knock-offs under what I will call the
'Napster Effect' where people assume that once they have a digital file of
something they can do anything they want with it.  It largely does not apply
to legitimate businesses.

TSR's attitude towards compatible products did more to harm the industry
than anything else.  This is where they failed to engage the customers.
I'll tolerate small legal fences if that's what it takes, just not big ones.
