First of all, I do not agree that there is enough awareness. In my circle of
friends and contacts (online and off) only a few of them know about the OGL
and the OGF. None of them know more about it than I do (which isn't much),
and all of them heard about it through me.

And even if there is enough awareness, my point is that there isn't the right
kind of awareness. OK, so we both agree that "perception" is a problem. So,
how do you fix that problem? How to you change the awareness? With
publicity. Good Publicity. Right? Or is there some other way to change
public perception that I am not aware of?

Someone needs to lead the OGF and make it stand alone. It needs publicity,
fans, and a strong sense of purpose. It behooves everyone involved for the
OGF to have a better, stronger public image.

The FAQ is wonderful, but it isn't enough. If you feel that the OGL is
suffering then efforts need to be made on our end to fix it.

Here are the tools that we have: We have the e-mail lists, regional papers,
web pages. Some of us can write. I'm great at giving speeches. We can find
other organizations that are dedicated to the altruistic advancement of open
source materials (libraries, free databases, software, etc.) There is a
precident for what the OGF is trying to do. Let's use it and quit waiting
for the public to get their heads out of their butts on their own... because
I can tell you it's gonna be a long wait.

The list should decide what it wants the OGF to be... and then work to make
it that way. I know this has been going on for a long time, but it's not
over yet because "we" don't have what we want yet. Right? So, there is no
reason to be discouraged. What has been done in the past is clearly not
working. Time for something new.

Regards,
Maggie
