I think these documents are inevitable, and I think those publishers that
prepare for (if not embrace) them will be happier in the long run. The
trouble with 'by request' is that it mean you are spending your time
servicing free requests. A download on the web takes none of your time, so
you can spend it making money. (I agree it doesn't take long, but these
costs have a way of adding up after a while).
Clever use of PI with your OGC (as in the Creature Catalog where the monster
names are PI) will inhibit the freeloaders somewhat, but the more of this
you do, the more people will complain about their inability to use your open
material. It is a trade-off that must be decided on an individual product
basis.
