You'll need to remain curious. There were no comprehensive market studies
done at the time. What is known is that TSR developed a reputation for being
an unfriendly company, one that WotC worked hard to change. They lost
marketshare for a number of other reasons, and stood on the brink of colapse
when WotC bought them out. Ryan wrote an excellent article on the topic a
couple of years ago. I don't have a link, but it might still be posted on
the WotC web site.

That doesn't change the fact that they are comfortable using unreleased
material, and confident that it will be released. That was the question, and
my answer.
