It's not that hard to reverse engineer, but look at it this way: fantasy d20 has magic, and the characters have this sliding scale for their 'target wealth' based on level. So, because of obscene amounts of magical equipment, a 20th level fighter does have a much better AC (commoner is an NPC class and has much lower target wealth).
With this in mind, a low magic campaign might make a class defense bonus a viable alternative to +5 mithril full plate, +5 large shield, gloves of dex +6, ring of prot +5, amulet of natural armor +5, boots of speed, and all the usual extras.
