I upgraded OI on one of my systems today. Everything worked normally,
with one exception. When I started a mate-terminal, it came up with a
black screen that did not accept commands. Here is a normal
mate-terminal session on a system that has not been upgraded:

Here is the broken session on the system I just upgraded:

The mate-terminal has not started my shell as a login shell.
That's as far as I've gotten in my investigation so far.
