I have another system that was upgraded on 2024-08-16, only a few months ago. On this system, mate-terminal had a white screen, with "Colours from system theme" checked. On the system upgraded yesterday, mate-terminal had a black screen, with invisible black text. It too had "Colours from system theme" checked. All I had to do was uncheck this option to have the text appear in black with a pale background. Apparently mate-terminal always displays text in black. Thanks for your help.
