It's also hard for the developers, as we are expected to answer all
those question :-)

I like your idea to improve the digestability of the mailing-list traffic.

But splitting up the user list would be quite atypical for a Jakarta
project. As you can see here http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail2.html
the OJB users list is ranked as medium traffic (don't ask me how high
traffic looks like). All other projects only have a user- and a
developer-list.
I don't know if users will like us if we ask them to register 7
different mailing-lists?

here is my compromise:
let's use simple prefixes as on most usenet groups in our mail subjects
to differentiate topics. E.G.:

[FAQ]
[NEWBIE]
[INSTALL]
[EXAMPLES]
[MAPPING]
[SEQUENCES]
[PB]
[OTM]
[ODMG]
[JDO]
[DEPLOY]
[GENERAL]

this will allow to use message filters to sort the incoming mails into
different folders.
This is also more flexible as we won't have to set up a new mailing-list
for each new topic.

what do you think,
cheers,
Thomas
