Ok guys and gals...I took the tower off my 4-speed (SM-420) and there appears
to be a lot of "slop" in it. The yokes move around very easily and everything
seems loose. I have done some research and have found kits to re-build the
transmission but nothing seems to address this area of the transmission. I
would hate to spend money to get the tranny rebuilt or attempt the job myself
to gain nothing....done that too many times already. I don't even know if I
have an issue. What I do know is that my shifting pattern is quite large. I
didn't think anything of it until I drove a truck just like mine and the shift
pattern was considerably smaller. In fact, it startled me when I went to shift
from 2nd to 3rd. On my truck, the gearshift ball moves probably 16 inches or
so. This one seemed like less than a foot. Am I looking at a loose tower or a
transmission that needs to be rebuilt? If it is the tower, what can I do about
it? Do I need to do anything? Anybody else got a 4 speed they can share their
experience with?

Thanks,
Roy
