Its hard to diagnose this type of thing without seeing it and putting hands on
it but I'll ask a few questions. Is the shift lever "ball and cap" snug in the
tower socket? It shouldn't have any up and down movement, just pivot action
only. Does the lower tip of the shift lever shows signs of wear? It should be
approx the same dimension as the rectangular slots in the shift forks.

The large main shaft with the main gears (the gear set that the forks slide
down into) should have very little forward and aft thrust movement. Check that
all the forks are tight to their prospective shafts, they are either pinned or
with set screw.

Remember that 1st gear (granny) always has more throw than the other forward
gears. Assembled, with the tranny in neutral the shift lever will of course
move side to side freely but with light pressure forward and aft, you should be
able to feel the lever tip contact the forks with only about two or three
inches of play measured at the shift knob.

Run your finger tip in the "slots" of the shift forks. They supposed to be
square cut. The lever tip sometimes wears into the thrust sides.

Let me know what you find. Need to figure out whats wrong then decide what to
do about it.
