Just dunk the top part in a bucket of gasoline and let it soak , then shake / 
agitate it a bunch and run it up and down it the gas so it runs all the sludge 
out , sort of like a string mop....

Once you've cleaned it well , fill the oil cup to the line / arrow with ATF and 
keep an eye on it as the remaining dirt will be washed out in a few hundred 
miles . 

Resist the urge to use Laquer Thinner or other harsh chemicals that will attack 
and damage the horsehair element .
