As long as it comes up off the peg when you rev. it above idle ,it's good to go .
When absolutely new , maybe 15 # @ idle then increase to 30 ~ 35 PSI under load but , these are old tech , high volume , low pressure engines so no worries . Nervous Nellies always insist you have to change the gauge but you don't ~ _millions_ of old Chevies ran 235's for many years with the low pressure 216 gauge and never had any problems . If you've overhauled your engine and are wondering why the oil pressure seems so low , it's prolly leaking out by the cam bearings. Simple pass/fail test : warm up the engine then let it idle and remove the oil filler cap and peer in at the rockers clicking away ~ each one has a little oil relief hole drilled in the exact centerline of the top , if you see oil dribbling out , FANSATIC ! you have a great oiling system . If , OTOH , like most 235/261 engines , you see nothing coming out , rev. the engine a bit , not a whole lot , maybe to 1,500 RPM's & wait a few moments ~ oil should begin weeping out the tiny hole and flying off the rocker as it clicks . If so , congradulations ! your engine is fine . If not , don't panic , try a HOT oil & filter change using synthetic 5W whatever oils , this will clean up the sludge in 90 % of the older , dirty engines after you drive it a few hundred miles . If you see crispy burned looking dry crap all over your rockers , the top end oil passage is plugged , you'll need to make up a simple by-pass line that runs from the oil gauge fitting , 'round the back of the blockand up to the 1/4" NPT fitting in the dead center right side of the cylinder head , then a HOT synthetic oil change..... I hope this helped , it's not rocket science here , just tinker it back to health and it'll be fine . -Nate Gerry wrote: > > I would like to know what is the normal oil pressure is for a 1956 235 ci > full pressure engine?
