My truck lives in Pasco, Washington with my daughter
and son in law. I live in Southern California and see it a
couple of times each year.

In 2009, dirt in the carb prompted us to replace the
original gas tank, sender, fuel pump, filter, fuel lines
and carb.

By 2010 we had installed a Pertronix breakerless ignition
module and set the timing to factory spec using the BB
marker on the flywheel. Vacuum and mechanical advance
were working, the heat riser valve worked like new and the
exhaust system was clear. The truck ran okay but had a
lack of pulling power under load. If pushed at low RPM it
would backfire through the carb like a cold engine, even
though it was fully warmed up.

In 2011 we installed a second rebuilt carb and verified
the float level, since backfire and lack of power can both
come from a lean mixture. There was no improvement.

Since lack of power under load can also come from a weak
spark we replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, rotor, cap
and coil. There was no improvement.

Still looking, we decided to try more spark advance. We
advanced it “some,” drove it and found a real improvement.
Adding advance twice more gave a huge improvement in
drivability. She pulls like a locomotive and the backfire
is gone. The timing light shows we are about 1.3 inches
advanced from the BB, we guess it to be 15 degrees more.

This timing method takes me back to the 1950s when a kid
with no timing light could do a decent job by advancing a
little and test driving until it started to tinkle, then
retard it a little. If you then found it started hard due
to too much advance, you backed it off a little more.

The mystery within this exercise is why my 235 was so
weak at the factory setting.

Timing with electronic ignition
Mon Jul 16, 2012 3:24 pm (PDT) . Posted by: "rmark...@cox.net" t80c26

I put Tom Langdon's HEI ignition on my 216 and it runs very well. However, I
am just
curious if anyone else has done the same and if you have, what do you have
your timing
set at? Mine is 10 degrees BTDC.

Thanks,
Roy
