Call me old-fashioned, but I'm used to doing this all with ifconfig(1M) and 
editing /etc/hostname.X files.  I know I should learn this new stuff, but I 
never have had the wherewithal until now.

REALLY?  So this fails on 006, but works on 012?!  I quickly looked at 
illumos-gate to see what all got fixed if anything, and I didn't see anything 
that would've necessarily improved things.
