There is one little thing left.

Today when I built and installed again, after rebooting, the banner still
showed the old build branch number. Although when I typed in "uname -a", it
did show ${VERSION} from opensolaris.sh as the branch number.

Obviously /etc/motd was not modified accordingly. But the thing is I
distinctly remember it had been modified automatically, unless my memory is
wrong...
