I do believe you're guilty of underestimating the number of, e.g., kernel hackers who will jump at the opportunity to put the "hobbyist" card in their box, thus instantly being able to compile their code to hardware, never mind being able to run Tuxracer at blinding speeds. Well, "instantly" with a grain of salt, Cobbling together a usable, partly free-as-in-beer and partly free-as-in-speech toolchain will require some effort, but hey, we've been there before.
