Fins are fine.  Heatsinks are quiet and reliable, fans are not.

I suppose they use fans because fans are cheaper and smaller and
most people don't care.  I have an audio power amp that is rated
at 200 Watts per channel and doesn't have a fan.  So it should be
possible to build an fanless ethervideo box.  Microprocessors
didn't need fans until DEC's Alpha.

That said, we don't want obscene electric bills or a room heater.
Or construction techniques that only Black Forest Elves can work on.
