Howard, Please forgive me if I'm stating the obvious. I'm not sure your background with libraries or library software.
Evergreen's bibliographic database is creating using the information held in MARC records. For each item that is cataloged, there must be a corresponding MARC. If you did not have access to an already created MARC record for the Algebra book that you mentioned, you would need to create one in Evergreen.
