valgrind is an amazing tool. I never add new code to OpenBabel without
running it through valgrind, and I've found several memory leaks and memory
corruptions in the past using valgrind. It's available as source code, and
as a package (debian or RPM) on most major Linux distributions.
The only drawback is that it's slow, so you need a test case that normally
finishes in a few seconds or a minute. My experience is that it's
something more than 10x slower than running the program the normal way.
